How to Clean a Mesh Strainer (Even Flour Stuck in Fine Mesh)

The short answer: rinse under hot running water within a minute of using it, brushing the back side with your fingers or a soft brush. For flour, cocoa or dried-on batter in fine mesh, soak five minutes in warm soapy water, then rinse from the BACK – water pressure pushes the particles out the way they came in. Dishwasher-safe strainers can simply ride the top rack.

The one habit that prevents 90% of scrubbing

Mesh only becomes hard to clean when food dries inside the weave. Straining pasta, rinsing rice, sifting flour – none of it sticks if the strainer meets hot water right away. Thirty seconds now saves ten minutes of picking later.

Flour and cocoa: the special case

Dry powders wedge into the openings of a fine 60-mesh screen, and wetting them halfway turns them to glue. The fix: fully soak first (five minutes in warm, soapy water), so the paste loosens everywhere at once – then rinse from the back side under strong water. A soft pastry brush or an old toothbrush clears the last specks. Never use a metal scourer: it bends the weave and leaves permanent thin spots.

Stains, odors and white film

Tea and turmeric tint stainless mesh over time; a paste of baking soda and water, left for ten minutes, lifts most of it. White film is usually hard-water minerals – a 1:1 vinegar-water soak dissolves it in minutes. Both rinse away completely, and neither harms 304 stainless steel.

What ruins strainers (avoid these)

Metal scourers on the mesh, banging the rim hard against the sink edge to knock food loose, and leaving acidic food (tomato, citrus) sitting in the bowl for hours. And for ordinary strainers there is a fourth killer: the dishwasher’s heat cycles slowly fatiguing the spot weld where the handle meets the bowl – the joint that eventually snaps. COLAROA sidesteps that one by design: the cup spring-fits into the handle frame with no weld between handle and cup, and every part is dishwasher safe.
